According to a new study supported by the American Cancer Society, the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is rapidly increasing among younger individuals (under 50 years of age) and with more advanced stages of the disease.
Data show that in the U.S., adherence to screening is low in those aged 45-49 years (20%) and 50-54 years (50%). The authors outline “a rapidly changing disease landscape that foreshadows less favorable trends for the future”.
Dr Knudsen, CEO of the American Cancer Society said: “The shift to diagnosis of more advanced disease also underscores the importance of screening and early detection, which saves lives.”
Across the Atlantic, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Europe, with an increase in new cases due to the impact of the pandemic on screening delays.
Based on the latest available scientific developments and evidence, the European Commission released in Sep 2022 updated recommendation for CRC screening, suggesting “calls for triage testing for colorectal cancer in people aged 50-74 through fecal immunochemical testing to determine potential follow-up via endoscopy/colonoscopy”.
All these recent findings arise the urgent need to enhance public awareness in order to get the prevention machine moving again.
