A group of European countries, including France, United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden, have reported a large increase in severe Streptococcus A cases among children less than 10 years of age, including fatalities, since September 2022.
It’s possible that this incidence have followed a period of reduced infection during the COVID-19 pandemic, associated with a recent increased circulation of respiratory viruses, including seasonal influenza, whose co-infection with the virus may increase the risk of invasive Group A streptococcal (iGAS) disease.
